Care Tips

Polartec® fabrics are known for their easy care and lasting durability. Most Polartec® fabric can be washed in warm water and tumbled dry on low and in most cases this will deliver the best post-wash feel and performance.

However, every single Polartec® fabric can be machine-washed cold and line dried and a few of our fabrics require it. This approach is the most gentle for the fabric and is also the most energy-efficient. One of the greatest environmental impacts of our clothing is washing and drying over the life of the garment. Using cold water and line drying saves a large amount of energy. And most Polartec® fabrics are stain-resistant (requiring less laundering) and dry extremely quickly on their own.

In 1981, Polartec® forever changed the way the world dresses for cold weather with the invention of polar synthetic fleece. By engineering polyester fibers into a distinctly innovative knit construction they created a more durable and versatile outerwear fabric than anything in use at the time. After more than 30 years our fleece remains the cornerstone of thermal insulating materials for its proven durability, lightweight warmth and fast drying characteristics.

Today, this fleece is still unmatched in quality. This fleece is the best, most pill-resistant quality in the world however, Polartec® has never been one to rest on its laurels.  Once again they are leading the way in new fabric technology by introducing the first fabric to reduce fibre shedding - Power Air™

We have small yardages of Polartec® fleece in several colors and various weights available.

  • Warmth without weight
  • Highly breathable
  • Pill resistant
  • Fast drying
  • Durable
  • Easy care

Polartec's latest mid-warmth fabric innovation, an insulating fabric that has been engineered to reduce fibre shedding by encapsulating the insulating lofted fibres within the knitting process.  While the motivation to create this fabric was a more environmentally sound material, the result is a unique fabric with great design appeal.  The face of the fabric is smooth, making it ideal for layering while the back side features interesting bubbles that can hold heat and breath at the same time.

Polartec® Windbloc® is designed to block 100% of wind and provide maximum protection from harsh elements and inclement weather. By embedding a breathable micro-porous laminate between a durable outer layer and lofted inner fibers we created a stronger balance between insulating warmth and performance stretch. This flexible versatility gives this protective fabric incredible resilience against the weather and abrasive elements without restricting comfort.

Wind Pro®

Designed to stand strong against the wind.

Polartec® Wind Pro® was developed to strengthen our fabric's ability to resist the effects of strong winds. By adapting our fleece structure through tighter knit constructions we created a new fabric composition that drastically reduces wind permeation. This provides the thermal insulation benefits, comfort and breathability of fleece with the added performance abilities to defy the wind and repel all forms of moisture.

Wind Pro® is a water repellent fleece that is super tightly knit, this helps block the wind. It comes in various weights.

We mainly have heavier weights suitable for jackets, toques and gloves.

Power Stretch®

Elastics need to flex and stretch without straining.

Polartec® Power Stretch® was developed to expand their base fabric's durability and range of motion. The majority of elastic base materials can stretch during movement, but lack the tensile strength to recover their original shape and become permanently damaged. By utilizing elastic fibers with enhanced resilience in our stretch construction we made a performance-fit base fabric that can handle the pressure of demanding physical activities.

Polartec® Power stretch® is a lovely smooth-face fabric with warm fleece backing. It makes amazing hoodies, comfy pants AND is also great for special needs garments because of its comfort and stretch.

We love it to make long socks for under boots, and it's also a good weight for AFO socks under braces because it is quite cushiony.

Power Wool

This is what Polartec says about PowerWool:

Combining merino and synthetic fibers in our patented hybrid construction enhances the performance benefits of each fiber while resolving many flaws of traditional blends. Wool's natural odor fighting properties are given a boost, and the unpredictability of shrinking and shape loss caused from washing is prevented through the resilience of synthetics.

Wool fibers offer increased base comfort by retaining insulation and breathability even when wet. Their absorbent nature pulls moisture vapor away from your skin, transferring it to the outer synthetic layer where it expands and evaporates more quickly. This mechanical wicking action allows Polartec® Power Wool™ to keep moisture in motion at all times.

NOTE: Machine wash in cold water, hang to dry. Avoid the use of fabric softeners. Power wool may shrink 4-5%.

Here is a link to a video that explains Power Wool

The following styles range from a warm weight to a very light silkweight, which would make a great base layer.

Thermal Pro®

Polartec® Thermal Pro® was developed to bring a wider variety of styles and performance functionality to synthetic fleece technologies. By re-engineering their construction methods they created an expansive platform of fabric structures with superior benefits over traditional fleece. These unique textures enhance the fabric's overall efficiency and are the defining reason why synthetic fleece will never go out of style as the preferred choice for performance insulation fabrics.

Thermal Pro® High Loft

This style is incredibly comfy and soft. The high loft back traps air against the skin, creating an extra level of insulation. Here a video showing how Patagonia used this fabric to make a wonderful jacket.
